and Owners Services Pages

Services Page 1 - Training Courses & Seminars.

We provide Pool & Plant Operator Training for a large number of organizations. The training is normally carried out On-Site, in a convenient room, and is reinforced using Overhead Projection images, and Hands-On equipment. There are a number of different training courses which we provide. Each course is supplimented with handbooks and notes etc, and each student receives a Certificate of Attendance

Level 1 - Basic Systems

This one day Training Seminar is intended for Swimming Pool and Plant Room Operators with little or no previous experience or knowledge of swimming pool operations, and is designed to provide a basic understanding of day to day functions of an average pool and plant room

Diagram of a simple level deck pool circulation system

The concept of pool water circulation is discussed and all the associated equipment, both in the pool shell and in the plant room, is examined to provide a full understanding of the entire swimming pool circulation system, including circulation pumps, filters, heat exchangers, as well as valves, skimmers, overflow weirs, drains, and inlets.

The function and reason for backwashing or cleaning the filters is defined, and the different types of filters encountered are illustrated and discussed to enable the operator to recognise them and understand the demands created by each type of filtration system.

The principle of pump and filter cleaning is described to give the novice operator a complete familiarity with these essential parts of the system, and the confidence to carry out this simple maintenance, essential to trouble free operation.

The other various items of pool equipment are considered, such as covers, cleaners, ladders, etc., to ensure that the day to day cleaning and maintenance of the pool can be carried out quickly and efficiently.

The origins of pollution in the pool are discussed to create an awareness of the need for disinfection control. Basic water chemistry is described, dealing with chlorine (and bromine) and pH, and the test methods are discussed and demonstrated to enable the operators to test the basic chemical conditions of their pool water, and take corrective action to ensure that the water quality reaches the required standards.

Finally, the Health & Safety aspect is discussed to create an awareness of the hazards associated with swimming pools, their equipment, and the chemical handling.

By the end of this seminar, those attending should be familiar with almost all aspects of swimming pool and spa systems, and be able to confidently carry out most day to day operations, and ensure that the system functions in a satisfactory manner.

This training seminar takes a full day. Course handbooks are provided but notes should also be taken. Delegates should bring their water test kits, wherever possible.

Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance to this training course

Level 2 - Water Chemistry

This Training seminar is particularly useful to those operators who have attended the Level 1 - Basic Systems training, or who have had sufficient experience in a swimming pool environment that they are fully familiar with the mechanical operations of the system.

The water cycle, and the origins of various various types of pool and spa water pollution are discussed as a foundation to understanding the corrective action required.

pH is explained, discussed and demonstrated, as is Total Alkalinity, together with the different chemicals available for correcting these levels.

Diagram of the disinfection process

The disinfection cycle and chlorination are discussed in depth to enable the operator to understand the effects and results of disinfection, and to understand the Disinfection Index. The various types of chlorine donors are detailed to enable operators choose a chlorine donor best suited to their particular facility.

The chemical residuals are also discussed, to explain the problems associated with the incorrect levels of cyanurates, Sulphates, Chlorides, and Calcium. The origins of these residuals are explored so that operators can understand the advantages and penalties of using a particular chemical

Alternative disinfection is also examined, leading to an understanding by the operator of Bromine, Ozone,Ultra Violet, and Copper/Silver Ioniic purification.

To complete the information, Total Dissolved Solids, and Water Balance problems are addressed, and Health & Safety regarding chemical handling is also discussed.

At each stage, the water testing methods for the particular topics are discussed to confirm a full understanding and ability to assess water quality. Finally, the students are presented with a number of examples of deteriorating or incorrect pool chemical levels, and are invited to discuss the causes, and their corrective action to restore water quality.

At the end of this training seminar, the students should be able to quickly recognise deteriorating water quality, carry out the appropriate tests, and take the most suitable corrective action.

This training seminar takes a full day. Course handbooks are provided, but notes should be taken. Students should bring their water test kits wherever possible.

After satisfactorily completeing both the Level 1 and the Level 2 training seminars, each delegate should be capable of being fully responsible for the operation of the swimming pool and/or spa at their facility.

Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance to this Training Seminar.

Level 1A - Water Testing Methods

<<< section under construction >>>

This is a practical half-day training course for pool supervisers who are responsible for carrying out water testing.

The tests normally covered are Chlorine, Bromine, pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness, Cyanuric Acid, Sulphates, and Chlorides. TDS is discussed, as well as Water Balance, and the Disinfection Index.

Each test is fully explained and demonstrated, and possible interference from other chemical residuals is brought to the attention of the students, so that they can accurately determine the chemical levels present.

After each test, or series of tests have been explained, the students are invited to carry out the test themselves, using their own test equipment, to ensure that they are fully conversant with the testing methods.

Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance to this Training Seminar.

LEVEL 1B - Hygiene for Swimming and Hydrotherapy Poolside Staff and Care Staff

This is a one day training course aimed specifically at care staff, swimming teachers, and life guards etc., who are responsible for the use of the swimming or hydrotherapy facility, but do not get involved in the operational running or maintenance of the plant and equipment or in the handling or administering of any chemicals

The basic circulation system and its components are described, to create an awareness of the essential requirements and the functioning of the filtration and pumping equipment.

pH value is explained and demonstrated in a simple form so that the principles of this fundamental measurement can be understood, and required pH values are discussed.

The origins of pollution are indicated and discussed in order to generate an awareness of the requirements and the necessity for continuos and effective disinfection and oxidation.

The location and distribution of introduced pollutants is examined to enable the concept of preventative pollution control be accepted.

The disinfection process is examined and described to give a full understanding of the reactions of pool water disinfectants on pollutants and organic debris. The effect of insufficient disinfection is illustrated, together with the effects of high pH values causing reduced effectiveness of a residual disinfectant.

The daily routine for poolside staff, together with preventative action, is discussed to enable the staff to identify critical areas, and the suggested remedial action is analysed.

Finally, essential pool water tests are practised on various water samples to enable the participants to become familiar with the pool water testing equipment, and to assist them to be able to rapidly assess the basic quality of their pool water and judge whether or not the facility may be safely used.

At the end of the day, the poolside staff should have a considerable insight into the demands on the principle chemical levels and residuals; be able to identify and eliminate sources of unnecessary pollution; and to confidently carry out regular routine water testing and accurately determine. the suitability of the water for safe usage.

Although course handbooks are provided, delegates should take appropriate notes, and where ever possible, bring their water test kits.

Delegates will receive a certificate of attendance to this Training Seminar.
